Junior Surf
Sunday Sessions
It all happens here on a Sunday!
We offer our Junior Surf program on Sunday mornings with each age group training alongside each other on the beach with an emphasis on FUN and building confidence.
Refuel after Sunday’s session with our weekly sausage sizzle, stay for lunch or an ice cream at our Club Cafe, or just hang out and enjoy the beach for the afternoon.

General Q&A
Communication
Please ensure you have the Team Reach app for your child’s age group. All communications will be put here for your information including cancellations, changes, updates. The group code will be on your registration email or you can ask your group manager.
What you Need
Orewa High visibility vest or Orewa long sleeve hi vis rashie and Orewa skull cap are compulsory. Refer to our Junior surf uniform and equipment page for full details. Togs, towel, and sunscreen! Snacks and water are encouraged along with wetsuits at the start and end of the season.
Parental Involvement
To assist in the running of Junior Surf, we do require parent help. We understand that families are busy juggling kids, work and other commitments but we request that you give just 5 hours of your time throughout the season to help develop our young junior surf lifeguards and promote water safety in our community. There are many ways to help, whether it’s working the BBQ, helping with gear tidy up, water support, coaching, managing a team or even becoming a lifeguard yourself - your involvement matters and makes a big difference. When purchasing your junior membership online, you will have the opportunity to share how you would like to help out during the season.
Coaches and managers will ask for active participation by parents each week both in and out of the water, so please be prepared to be part of the community spirit of fun and development. We welcome extended family support too, Aunts, Uncles, Grandparents!
What we provide
Gear - Boogie Boards (unpatched and Under 10s); Club Kneeboards; specialist rescue gear as needed.
What to Expect
A Sunday junior surf session usually involves, warm up, followed by a mixture of races, games and skill-based activities on the beach and some water activities with some weeks focusing on theory.
Focus of our development includes:
Beach games – practicing skills to stay safe on the beach while increasing speed, agility and responsiveness.
Water activities / games - using body boards / knee boards, entering and exiting the water quickly and safely and may include mock rescues, understanding / identifying / managing / escaping a rip, etc.
How to set up a beach patrol, tubes, IRBs, becoming a Rookie (13yrs+)
Preventative actions - Being sun smart, teaching of surf safety rules –depend on year group
Resilience and responsiveness – beach flags, sprinting and relays (land and water based)
What We Do Not Do
We do not teach swimming during Junior Surf Sunday sessions. The Sunday sessions are structured appropriately for each age / ability group, and children must be at the swimming level required for their appropriate age groups for surf sport. We will assess a child’s water confidence and ability and reassess throughout the season to ensure they are in the appropriate ability groups. Parents/Guardians are responsible to ensure they have the swim training to support their progression.
Progressing Beyond Sunday Sessions
We offer opportunities for juniors to advance their beach and surf skills. These include carnivals, weekday training over the summer and winter pool champs. For more information see our Age Group Opportunities
