Rescue of the Month

During March 2026, the Orewa Surf Life Saving Club Search and Rescue (SAR Squad) responded to a Police initiated SAR after a kayaker went missing in the Waiwera River following a capsize in tidal conditions. Lifeguards rapidly deployed IRBs and an RWC, conducting searches across the river, estuary and adjacent coastline, demonstrating strong technical SAR skills in a challenging tidal-river environment. Key personal items were located, providing critical information to Police and guiding search planning.

Despite an initial stand-down, lifeguards persistence and situational awareness resulted in the missing person later being located, with lifeguards assisting Police with body recovery and maintaining professionalism throughout a complex, multi-agency operation.
